World Sleep Day 2018

Today is World Sleep Day and under the motto, “Join the Sleep World, Preserve Your Rhythms to Enjoy Life”, World Sleep Day draws attention to the problems and dangers of sleep disorders and the importance of sleep for good health.

The World Sleep Society organizes this event annually with numerous sleep awareness activities.

All living organisms have a circadian rhythm, which controls various rhythms in the body such as temperature, hormone levels and alertness. A good night’s sleep is an essential factor for a healthy biological clock. The significance of this system for our body is reflected by the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2017, which was awarded to scientists working on circadian rhythms.

During sleep, our body is restored physically and the information received during the day is reorganized and restructured. This process helps to improve our memory. Some parts of the brain actually use more energy during sleep than during the day. Sleep matters; people who get a good night’s sleep are more energetic, suffer less from depression and stress, are more attentive and have a lower chance of high blood pressure, diabetes, or other chronical diseases.

To get a night of sleep without interruption, you should keep the following things in mind:

  • have defined bed times
  • eat light and avoid caffeine in the evening
  • try to keep the temperature in the bedroom around 17 Celsius
  • leave your smartphone outside the bedroom (or switch it off)

So let’s celebrate World Sleep Day 2018. Sleep well and sleep yourself healthy!
